It seems every jewelry design movement is a reaction to or pushback from an earlier era. And the mid-century modern movement is no different. Mid-century modern (MCM) is a broad term for a circa 1950s to 1980s push
back against traditional styles and techniques. MCM encompasses straight lines, odd angles and even so called
“brutalism.”
This week, a fellow jeweler/collector sold us a masterpiece of sorts from the designer Björn Weckström of the brand Lapponia. Named “The Flower Wall,” we paid almost $5,000 for the piece, about 10% over gold value. We are selling at our auction for $5,000-$7,000 estimate, and hope to sell for over $5,000.
These are cool because they are so heavy that large numbers of them were melted for their gold value as gold prices soared and styles changed. But MCM and brutalism are back — in force.
