What’s It Worth? Cool Coins That Might Be Sleepers

While American collectors often focus solely on U.S. coins, foreign silver pieces can offer surprising value —
especially rare specimens in excellent condition.

Though billions of foreign copper coins remain inexpensive and readily available, large pre-1900 silver coins often command impressive prices. These dollar-sized pieces once powered international trade and carry
fascinating histories.

Foreign Coin Value vs American Coin Value

The term “dollar” actually derives from “thaler,” a large silver coin first minted in the 16th-century Holy Roman Empire that set worldwide currency standards. Equally significant, the Spanish 8 coins, reales — the original
“pieces of eight” — served as official U.S. currency until the 1850s and gave us the term “two bits” for a quarter dollar.

Most 8 real coins are worth $20-$40, but we’d pay $2,000 for this one.

Keep in mind: most common dates and poor condition dates are still worth only the silver value, but we share some “sleepers” here with you. We have coin experts at both stores to serve you!

Collectors particularly prize 17th-19th century 8 reales coins with rare dates or mint marks. Large silver pieces from Imperial Russia and pre – 1900 France also attract worldwide interest for their beautiful designs and high
silver content.

Russian roubles are worth $5 to $50, but we’d pay $1,500 for this one.
