We love art deco. And with gold prices so high, we make every effort to preserve fine antique jewelry from being melted down for its gold value.
This week, a Chicago jeweler sent us an exquisite, complete cufflink, stud, and button set with an estimated gold value of around $1,600. Unable to find a buyer, the jeweler was planning to scrap
it—but we couldn’t let that happen. We paid $1,800 because it was such a stunning example of art deco
design. The enamel was nearly flawless, and the rubies, though small, were a rich, vivid red. To top it off, it came in the original box, which adds to its value.
Although the market for cufflink and stud sets is a shrinking niche market, we couldn’t bear to see this piece of 1920s craftsmanship lost to the melting pot. We have a deep love for art deco and are always interested in purchasing pieces like these. (Wilson & Gill, the retailer/manufacturer, was in business
from 1892 until 1991 in the UK.) These are for sale in our St. Petersburg store for $2,300. (Retail replacement or insurance value is $6,500.)
Preserving Authentic Art Deco
Note: More common 14k gold cufflinks from the ‘50s, especially unsigned ones, are often worth more than your gold value. Feel free to bring them in for a free evaluation.
