What’s It Worth? The Mystic Allure Of Rose-Cut Diamonds

I have often said that the biggest diamond mine in the world is the jewelry boxes of American women. We have bought millions of dollars worth of diamonds each year from people just like you. We buy from jewelers and dealers across the country, and last week, a jeweler from Texas sent us this beauty.

These odd-looking diamonds are called “rose cuts.” They were popular in Russia and Middle Eastern countries centuries ago and are highly sought after today, and not just because of their unusual shape — but because they are rather inexpensive! The diamonds are heavily faceted on the top but they have no bottom! So a diamond that is 6.3 to 7 millimeters in size may look like a 1- to 2-carat stone, while it actually only weighs about 1/3 of a carat.

This ring was made in the Art Deco period and it appears as if someone took centuries-old diamonds and mounted them in platinum with scores of tiny natural sapphires around each stone to satisfy the appropriate look of the 1930s. Value / insurance value is likely around $3,500 or more. We paid under $1,500 and it is for sale in our store for under $2,200. I hope you enjoyed this cool, odd diamond and the story behind it.
