While we write a lot about our love of vintage Cartier, Tiffany and Harry Winston (as well as Van Cleef & Arpels and David Webb), we absolutely LOVE the designs of Sophia D.
Many of us former mid-westerners and southerners think of New York as (like the saying goes) “a nice place to visit but I wouldn’t want to live there.” Noisy, fast-paced, chaotic, overwhelming.
But out of this chaos, about 35 years ago, emerged a small company called Sophia D, that specialized in an almost perfect melding of the old world and the new. Combining expert craftsmanship with an incredible nod to the art deco period, this company straddles the line between hands-on diamond setting work and computer-aided design (CAD) to make special-order pieces for not only well-heeled New Yorkers, but clients all over the world.
They start with an idea – your idea. And then tweak your idea with several sketches and CAD to bring your concept to life. Only after your approval do they make your piece. They use the top-quality materials that better known design houses use, like D to F color diamonds and the finest gemstones. Only the best.
The result? A one-of-a-kind item that is very expensive, but utterly unique. When these one-of-a-kind items make it to the “secondary market” (used or estate or pre-owned) they are quickly snapped up by collectors.
The name may be obscure to most of us, but watch out for Sophia D. Look them up online.
These pieces are for sale by us in our St. Pete store (or by appointment at Hyde Park). Retail pricing for these items ranges from $8,000-$25,000; they are available in our store for 1/3 of that.
