A Maryland jeweler heard we were experts in Cartier jewelry. While we have already written about Cartier three times this year, this piece is too beautiful not to share.
Vintage Cartier items are some of the most sought after items in the world of vintage jewelry. Typically the older the better – with Art Deco being the most coveted. However, Cartier craftsmen were still making mid-century modern masterpieces into the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s.
Today’s subject piece is extraordinary for many reasons. The quality of the coral in the body is exceptional and the diamonds are D-F color and VVS quality – the very best. But the two most influential details that made us write a check for five figures are 1. the sheer size (3 inches wide) and 2. the maker’s mark, which indicates that is was made by Georges L’enfant, who is considered one of the mid-century-modern master craftsmen for Cartier in the 1950s-’70s.
We called a New York auction house and they estimated the value as $10,000-$15,000; if it were to sell for the lower figure it would result in a loss for us after auction fees. Plus, we’ve already been offered a profit from one of our many collectors, so we will go it alone on this one.
